For the third time in three years, OU defensive backs will be directed by a new coach, but a familiar face.
Bobby Jack Wright has been with the Sooners since Bob Stoops became head coach in 1998. Last season Wright coached defensive ends and served as the recruiting coordinator.
His familiarity with the program and the likelihood that he personally recruited the players to play at OU made Wright an easy fit for the new post as co-defensive coordinator.
"A lot of times when you have a coach come in from the outside there's a transition in understanding personalities and how (the coach) can push buttons and those type of things," OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables said. "Obviously there wasn't that transition for him there and he understands our schemes."
When it comes to college football, Wright has been around the block. Before he landed the job at OU, Wright was an assistant coach at Texas from 1986-1997. Wright has been involved with college football since 1979.
In the preseason, Wright has stressed to his players that "in our place you've got to win your way everyday."
Head coach Bob Stoops said he was proud of Wright's coaching during the offseason and said his secondary was ready to play against TCU.
"I think Coach Wright has done a great job with them (secondary) in being demanding in the way they perform," Stoops said. "I think they have a shot to be a really great group."
