Trendy Television
by   |  August 22, 2005  |

Like fashion and music, television comes with its own set of trends that change from season to season.

As the fall season starts, many trends that have arisen and grown in the past few years continue to captivate a variety of television viewers.

This fall, the trend in crime television series will continue with CBS carrying "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "CSI: Miami" and "CSI: NY." Along with "CSI" and its spin-offs, CBS will also be hauling other crime investigation shows including "Cold Case" and "Without a Trace," according to TVGuide.com.

Other crime shows which will air this fall include "Alias," "Law & Order," "Law & Order: SVU," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," "COPS" and "Killer Instinct."

"Crime shows are just interesting, and it's always new. The shows make you think," said Andrew Walters, history sophomore.

Walters said he enjoys shows like "CSI," "Alias" and "Law & Order" because they are more compelling and require more thinking than many of the reality television shows.

Reality television shows still carry a large television audience and as many shows continue and sprout this fall.

According to TVGuide.com, ABC is carrying a continued dosage of such shows as "The Bachelor," "Wife Swap" and "Desperate Housewives." CBS will have "The Amazing Race" and "Survivor: Guatemala," and NBC will be carrying a taste of reality with "Meet Mister Mom."

Beyond the network television stations, reality television shows can also be found on MTV, VH1, and HGTV.

"I never missed an episode of 'The Bachelor,'" said Meredith McNatt, journalism senior. "I watch and think there's always that hope that he's going to pick the good girl."

McNatt said she enjoys watching reality shows like "The Bachelor" and "Laguna Beach" on MTV because they can make you feel better about your own life.

"I like 'Laguna Beach.' You may envy their money, but not their lives," McNatt said.

McNatt said the wealthy yet intensely dramatic lives of the reality show characters living in Laguna Beach animate the real life inhabitants of Orange County.

"The O.C." in contrast with reality television, is a trend in a category of its own. Entering it's third season, the soap-opera type drama captures a realistic touch on life and relationships.

Many students are claiming a steady viewership and loyalty to the friends and family living in Orange County, California.

"I watch The O.C., because it's realistic. Nobody's life is perfect," said Bose Akadiri, communications senior.

Akadiri said she enjoys "The O.C." alongside daytime soaps including "Passions" and "Days of Our Lives."
