The BCS and head coach Bob Stoops' decision to score more points against Nebraska on Saturday were the subjects of Tuesday's media luncheon.
Stoops discussed the team's upcoming trip to Baylor and how his team needed to be ready for that game and not look ahead towards the Big 12 Championship. He also talked about how he was pleased with the team's performance Saturday against Nebraska.
Shortly after the compliments he handed his players, Stoops was quick to answer questions about how the game ended. He said some of the criticism he received from the media was warranted, because looking back on the game he ended it the wrong way.
"I got caught up between the BCS and sportsmanship," Stoops said. "I should have been a sportsman and run the ball the last couple of times."
In his defense, Stoops said that when he was a defensive coordinator he always found it disrespectful to see the other team not give its best efforts until the end of the game. Stoops also was quick to note that the Sooners were not up by 50 points and that Nebraska wasn't a helpless team.
Stoops said the BCS is making coaches do some different things and think a different way right now. He said it is hard to just go undefeated anymore and feel good about it.
"You're 10-0 and you're wondering; Where's the fun?" Stoops said.
Stoops said he would rather be criticized, though, for winning games than losing and in a joking manner said his players are having fun with their record despite the BCS.
Stoops also answered questions about the role of the media and their influence on the polls.
"Everybody that is on TV has agendas, such as viewership and ratings, so the closer it becomes the better it is for them," Stoops said.
Stoops said the biggest college football media fixture, ESPN, had some impact on people, but he was unsure as to how much it had. However, Stoops brought up a point of discussion as to why some of the reporters on ESPN have implied that Auburn should be the No. 2 team.
"I'm fully aware that (ESPN has) a contract with the SEC and I can't be the only one that recognizes that," Stoops said.
Stoops said that he wasn't trying to stir up anything, but he did think it was worth thought. In related subject matter, Stoops commented on how the polls sometimes keep teams ranked in the same spot because it is where they started the season. He said it may be more helpful to rank teams after they play three or four games.
Stoops said the most important thing for his team to do was win games and not be concerned with BCS controversy. He said the team has to devote its focus to Baylor in order to win Saturday.
OU senior quarterback Jason White echoed the sentiments of Stoops when he said the only thing the team can control is how it wins and loses games.
