Break away
by   |  March 8, 2004  |

With spring break approaching quickly, many students will be hitting the road and traveling to vacation hot spots around the country.
One of the favorite locations for students to kick back is South Padre Island.
The warm Texas beaches, blue gulf waters and numerous attractions make it an awesome spot for spending a week escaping from school.
If you're headed to the south-Texas community, there are plenty of things to do while you're there.
The largest entertainment center in the city is Louie's Backyard and can be recognized by its giant bungie tower, the largest of its type in Texas.
It boasts 25 years of partying experience and will have Petey Pablo, Bubba Sparxxx, Juvenile, Crystal Method and other performers playing each night of the week.
Other attractions include go-carts, miniature golf and other amusements at Three Flags Over Padre, Schlitterbahn Beach Water Park for people who don't like to swim with the fishes and Island Equestrian Center, where you can ride horses along the beach.
The beach itself is a huge draw. South Padre has great waters for surfing, windsurfing, boating and fishing. There are many establishments that can arrange most types of watersport if you've got the cash.
Students interested in international endeavors can travel to Mexico since it's only 30 minutes away.
All one has to do is head back to Brownsville on the mainland and then hop across the border to Matamoros, Mexico.
Be sure to have a photo ID and a copy of your birth certificate so you don't get in trouble with the law.
The University of Texas' spring break is the same week as OU's, so students looking for places to stay may be out of luck when they try the local hotels.
No doubt the beaches and clubs will be packed with college students from all over the region, but that's part of the atmosphere that makes South Padre the party place that it is.
hello there & you too
