Each spring, the Union Programming Board hosts a welcome back
event for all students in Oklahoma Memorial Union. This
year’s event, scheduled for tonight, will include free food,
bingo and a movie.
Participating vendors will serve free food from 7 to 9 p.m.,
said Joanna Moss, graduate assistant for UPB.
She said the movie “Radio” will be shown three
times, 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., in Meacham Auditorium in the
union.
Bingo will start at 7 p.m. in the union food court and will run
until the 50 to 60 prizes are won, Moss said.
Some of the prizes include OU T-shirts, bath mats, a laundry
basket with detergent, Sooner Sense vouchers and school
supplies.
Some students are excited about the free stuff, while others
said they are not interested.
“Even though I live on campus, I probably won’t go.
I’d rather hang out with my friends at their
apartment,” said James Stern, University College
freshman.
A short drive for free food seems worthwhile for some commuter
students.
“I saw an announcement on the Sooner Information Network
about the Friday night event. I noticed there would be a movie
which I’m interested in seeing. I did not know there would be
free food and bingo,” said Stephanie Van Duynhoven, musical
theater senior.
“I might make it a pre-party event and try to win some
things at bingo,” she said.
Colin Ryan, University College freshman, said he agrees that a
short drive is well worth free food, though he said he hadn’t
heard a movie would be shown.
“I like free stuff, especially food,” Ryan said.
“I might try my luck at bingo, but I haven’t heard of
the film.”
Moss said while fewer students generally attend the
union’s spring welcome event than its fall welcome event, she
hopes to see students take advantage of planned activities.
“It is free and open to everyone. We hope to have a large
turnout this year,” she said.
