The opinion page is your page
by   |  January 16, 2004  |

We want your letters to the editor.

The Daily’s opinion page is your page. It’s the part
of the newspaper where you have a chance to create some of the
content.

A newspaper serves two functions. The first is simply to
inform—to let readers know what’s going on in their
community. The second is to provide a forum for debate and
discussion.

Most of the newspaper is dedicated to the first function. Thus,
it is the goal of every newspaper to be objective and accurate.

There is power in this objectivity. Readers can pick up their
copies every day to see what’s happening. Keeping bias out of
news stories allows readers to make their own decisions about
whether or not the “news” deserves their time or
action.

The second function of the paper, the forum function, is the
exclusive province of the opinion page. Accuracy is just as
important here as it is everywhere else in the paper, but here
it’s OK to express opinions.

Everyone has them, and the newspaper is no exception. It is a
journalistic conceit that a newspaper’s editorial can effect
change. The editorial strives to be an informed opinion developed
by a group of engaged citizens (The Daily’s editorial board)
in the public interest.

But the purpose of the opinion page is not solely to print The
Daily’s view. The space allotted for the editorial is a small
proportion of the entire page.

The opinion page doesn’t exist just to give the columnists
face time, either. The columnists aren’t supposed to be
right. The Daily prints them so you can read what they have to say,
think about their views and, most of all, respond.

The opinion page exists for you. The most important content is
Your Views. It’s the only part of this whole paper that you
get to write.

Newspapers have power in a community, power that can be used or
abused. Fortunately, newspapers also have a way for readers to
evaluate how well the paper exercises its power: letters to the
editor.

Did you read a story that you think is biased? Is there
something you think The Daily should be covering but isn’t?
Is there a point of view that you think is being ignored?

Send us your letters. We’ll print them.

The rest of the newspaper caters to you, the reader—you,
the seeker of information. The opinion page recognizes you, the
concerned citizen. You, the engaged reader. You, the thinker.

It’s impossible for the opinion page to represent every
view. That’s why The Daily makes space on this page for you
to write in.

The letters to the editor section is for you. It’s your
chance to air your views, to reach your community, to effect
change. Use it.
hello there & you too
