More students paying bursar online
by   |  February 12, 2004  |

Lines are beginning to dwindle at the Office of the Bursar as
more students turn to online payment methods.

That trend is likely to continue with the recent innovation of
E-statements, said Matt Hamilton, associate vice president for
admissions, records and financial aid.

E-statements are monthly online bursar statements that contain
the same information as the paper statements, which are mailed to
the billing addresses of students and parents.

Electronic statements were activated at the beginning of
February and are the second installment created by the
bursar’s office and Information Technology in an attempt to
encourage students to pay online. Online payment was the first
installment.

Since its inception just over a year ago, online payment has
been a hit with many students, Hamilton said. More than 30,000
transactions have taken place online, resulting in more than $27
million in payments.

In spring 2004 alone, online payment has already handled more
than 4,700 transactions totaling more than $6 million in payments,
Hamilton said. That is about 25 percent of the student
financial-transaction volume.

“Needless to say, we are very pleased with the
results,” Hamilton said. “Over time, I expect this
percentage to increase substantially.”

Brian Padgett, aviation management sophomore, said he has
quickly learned to utilize his online-payment methods.

“I haven’t even been back to the bursar since they
came out with the new system,” Padgett said.

Padgett, like many students, shares his college expenses with
his parents.

Parents and other authorized parties are allowed to view
E-statements and make payments online as well, Hamilton said.

Paul Worcester, University College freshman, said he was
relieved to learn about online payment options as he stood in line
at the bursar’s office.

“Hopefully, I won’t have to wait in this long line
and watch a whole episode of ‘The Cosby Show’ ever
again,” Worcester said.
