Gunshots were fired in the parking lot on Jenkins Street south
of Sarkeys Energy Center early Saturday morning.
Nearby residents and witnesses said they heard between five and
eight gunshots fired at about 2:30 a.m.
Steven Bothell, architecture senior, said he heard the shooting
while he was driving north on Jenkins.
“At the time that I heard the shots, I saw the officers
running across the street, guns drawn and pointed,” Bothell
said.
Bothell said he heard two to three shots at first and then two
more gunshots, and he said he saw a crowd of people in the parking
lot scatter.
“People were just going crazy, just trying to get the hell
out of there,” Bothell said.
Rachel Turney, geography graduate student, also witnessed the
shooting. She said she saw about 30 people in the parking lot when
she heard five gunshots.
“People were yelling, ‘Get down, get
down,’” Turney said. “Then the cops swarmed
in.”
Turney said the police were there shortly after people started
yelling. She said she saw a girl lying on the ground crying.
About 10 police cars and about 15 officers arrived on the scene,
representing the Norman Police Department and OU Department of
Public Safety.
Officers were questioning about 15 to 20 people. One person was
handcuffed and put into a police car.
Saturday morning at the scene, Sgt. Gary Robinson of OUDPS said
no one was injured by the gunfire but one person was taken to the
hospital with a “cut injury.”
It is unclear who fired the shots or why they were fired, but
Robinson said no shots were fired by either OUDPS or Norman police.
However, he said officers arrived on the scene with their weapons
drawn.
On Sunday, OUDPS would not comment on the shooting or if there
is an investigation. Lt. Paul Swenson of Norman Police Department
said the department has no reports on the shooting because it is
out of its jurisdiction. As of Sunday night, there were no written
reports at either police station.
