Hong Kong up for spotlight
by   |  April 2, 2004  |

The Hong Kong Student Association will present the first Hong
Kong Night to celebrate the country’s history, culture and
cuisine.

The association will present “Pearl of the Orient,”
which will include a drama, a video and a fashion show that will
reflect Hong Kong’s history. The event begins at 6 p.m.
Sunday in the Oklahoma Memorial Union Ballroom.

Jacky Chu, Hong Kong Student Association president and computer
engineering senior, said Hong Kong Night will be different from
other cultural nights because everything will be performed by
members.

“Others [organizations] go outside of campus to find
professionals to go onstage and perform for them, but our
performances will be performed by students,” Chu said.

Chu said one main part of the program is a drama about Hong
Kong’s history.

“We’re trying not to make it boring. It’s not
just the history,” said Jennifer Tse, association member and
international business and marketing senior. “We are
incorporating a story about the people of that time.”

Tse said the members wrote the drama about a couple struggling
to reunite throughout the complicated history of Hong Kong during
the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s.

The drama will also include traditional dances and songs.

Chu will be the male lead in the drama. He said the students
learned the dances from videos they have studied since the
beginning of the semester.

A video will also be shown as part of the program.

Verna Garrison, association webmaster and math senior, said the
video will be divided into four parts.

She said the first section will give a general history about
Hong Kong, and the second will describe its financial development
as a British colony. The third part will present famous people,
customs, religions and foods from Hong Kong, and the fourth section
will discuss Hong Kong’s return to China in 1997.

After the program, the association will host a dinner from
Orient Express in the Will Rogers Room featuring traditional
Chinese food.

“The food will be different from what is normally served
in the union,” Tse said.

Tickets will be sold today on the first floor of the union for
$8.
