OU police are investigating a series of fights that broke out after a fraternity party early Saturday morning in the Oklahoma Memorial Union Ballroom.
During the party, sponsored by Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, two women began fighting. As per university policy, the fraternity instructed security officers to shut down the party after the fight broke out, said Joseph Butler, fraternity president.
Police were summoned to the union shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday, according to police records.
After security personnel evacuated the ballroom, fighting resumed outside the union. Fraternity officers again notified police of the situation.
At least eight people were involved in one scuffle, but fled the scene as OU police arrived, said Sgt. Gary Robinson of the OU Department of Public Safety. Two cars parked near the union were damaged because of the fight.
Neither fraternity officials nor OU police know the identity of anyone involved in the scuffle.
"No one in my fraternity was involved in those fights," said James Gordon, fraternity treasurer.
The social event was open to the university community and not restricted to greek organizations, which makes it difficult to identify anyone involved, Gordon said.
"I suspect there were people coming in intoxicated, and they might have precipitated some of the fights," Robinson said.
Gordon said it's a fraternity policy that no one be admitted into Kappa Alpha Psi parties while intoxicated. Oklahoma Memorial Union personnel provided the security staff for the event. Those officers were responsible for monitoring the crowd for suspicious activity and for people who may have been intoxicated, he said.
