Skimmers enable thieves to record critical information and duplicate bank cards.
The ability to grab some quick cash from a bank automated teller machine has made our lives that much more convenient. At the same time though, when we withdraw money from an ATM, our money and account information can become vulnerable to theft or account fraud.
One theft method that has become an increasing problem is the use of an electronic device called skimmers. These devices are placed in some ATMs and can record your credit or debt card information, including name, address and PIN number. A thief will download the information on to the Internet and use it to make a duplicate card.
As a general rule, ATMs found on bank property are usually pretty safe from skimmers. The problem lies mostly with stand-alone, non-bank owned ATMs. You typically find this kind of machine inside shopping malls or convenience stores. So if possible, use your ATM card at a bank machine, preferably operated by your primary financial institution.
