Sooner Dan Cody receives Big 12 defensive award
Sooner defensive end Dan Cody was named the SBC Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after his strong performance against the Cowboys on Nov. 1.
Cody, who had three sacks against Josh Fields, becomes the third Sooner to receive the award this season. Derrick Strait received the award twice this year and Teddy Lehman captured it once.
Additionally, Cody tallied four tackles for a loss of 24 yards against the Cowboys--the most against Oklahoma State ever.
Women's tennis team falls in Indoor Playoff Final
The Oklahoma women's tennis team lost to BYU in the National Indoor Playoff Finals 4-2 after trouncing New Mexico 4-1. Despite a win from senior Anda Perianu and junior Heather Saluri in the doubles tournament, BYU won the other two matches to clinch the doubles point in the finals.
The Sooners in the singles tournament claimed three of the six matches, with freshman Irina Lykina beating BYU's Sofia Holden, 6-0, 6-1.
Although the Sooners end their fall schedule because of the loss, Anda Perianu will compete in the singles competition at the ITA National Indoor tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich., Nov. 6 to 9.
Virginia Tech's Hall and Miami's Rolle suspended
On Monday, the Big East suspended Virginia Tech cornerback DeAngelo Hall and Miami cornerback Antrel Rolle for their fight in the fourth quarter when Tech beat the Canes 31-7 on Nov. 1.
Hall is expected to miss the first half against Pittsburgh on Saturday, while Rolle will not play at all against Tennessee.
Rolle was slapped with a whole-game suspension because he was not in the game, while Hall was playing at the time.
Fuhr and LaFontaine inducted to NHL Hall
Ex-Oilers goalie Grant Fuhr and ex-Ranger forward Pat LaFontaine will be inducted into Hockey's Hall of Fame on Monday in Toronto.
Fuhr, who played for the Oilers in the 1980s, helped the team win 5 Stanley Cup titles from 1984-1990.
Fuhr was a first-round draft pick, eighth overall. He recorded 403 wins, 114 ties and 25 shutouts in 868 regular season games.
LaFontaine, who will be inducted with Mike Ilitch and Brian Kilrea, became the fifth American-born hockey player to accumulate 1,000 points in the NHL.
Playing in 865 games over a 15 year span, LaFontaine scored 468 career goals and 585 assists.
