Meet me in St. Louis
THE PLAN -- St. Louis resides a mere 516 miles away, making a trip there well within reach of anyone with a car. Interstate 44 will take you straight from downtown Oklahoma City to downtown St. Louis in about eight hours. From there, locate a place to stay. Motels outside of downtown will be the cheapest, but if you have money to burn, the Hyatt Regency or The Mayfair Hotel in downtown will put you up in style. However, plan to spend at least $100 per night in these establishments. For those on a budget, St. Louis offers several hosteling opportunities.
GETTING AROUND -- St. Louis' Metrobus and Metrolink light rail system can get you virtually anywhere in the city. Rides are $1.25 apiece for both the bus and train, but $4 will buy you an all day pass that works for both transit systems. If you stay downtown, you will be able to reach many places of interest on foot.
ATTRACTIONS -- St. Louis offers many attractions worth checking out. The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis houses a rather impressive collection of modern art and does not charge for admission. For the artistically inclined, St. Louis also offers the admission-free Laumeier Sculpture Park, a 96-acre sculpture garden filled with art of various sizes and media. The Anheuser-Busch Brewery offers free tours of its facilities for students who want to know where their weekend libations come from. For those wishing to blow some cash, riverboat gambling is a popular pursuit. The Casino Queen offers gaming seven days a week and is the only downtown area casino with free admission. Of course, no trip to St. Louis would be complete without a visit to The Gateway Arch, the signature fixture on the St. Louis skyline. A tram ride to the top of the 630-foot monument costs $8.
DINING OUT -- St. Louis is home to a variety of restaurants and culinary tastes. The Broadway Oyster Bar offers Cajun-Creole recipes as well as American delicacies, while BB's Jazz, Blues & Soups provides St. Louis-style cuisine in a nightclub-style setting to the sound of live jazz and blues acts. For fine Italian fare, go to The Hill, St. Louis' Italian district, which offers a plethora of fine dining in the Italian tradition. And, as a matter of course, the Hard Rock Caf
