Swashbuckling adventure with an order of love on the side.
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" offers what
most would probably expect in a genre such as this, but the movie
also carries a great comedic element.
Johnny Depp, for example, is terrific in his portrayal of
Captain Jack, a sort of bumbling genius who plays most of his
situations by ear. Depp plays his character with a straight face
while delivering silly yet insightful witticisms.
The supporting cast is also given the opportunity for plenty of
genuinely humorous moments as well. Director Gore Verbinski ("The
Ring") allows for subtlety by keeping the actors from going too big
with their humorous lines and giving the audience time to laugh
without cramming one-liners and adventure down their throats.
I did have a problem with the lead female role. She spends the
entire movie in the water or being groped by filthy pirates. Even
though I do have a touch of a feministic spirit about me, the
occurrences listed above are not what I have a problem with. What
bugs me is that even though she has been in situations where she
probably hasn't even brushed her teeth for days, she somehow
manages to keep her hair in place, her nails impeccably manicured
and her makeup fresh as when it was first applied. Yeah. Right.
However, to her characters' credit, though, she did end up with a
medium-sized smudge on her forehead near the end of the movie.
"Pirates of the Caribbean" is a great movie for the family,
except near the end when some might consider the violence to be a
little too graphic for the younger children. The visual effects
were fun and not too overwhelming. A good percentage of the
audience laughed in the right places. Simply stated, a fine time
had by all.
