Throwing Frisbees is something most people can remember doing as a youth. It was fun, easy and everyone had a good time. But they never thought it would be a competitive sport.
Enter Ultimate Frisbee! Ultimate Frisbee is like football with a Frisbee. Played on a long field with two end zones, the object is to pass the disc from player to player until it is intercepted or caught in the opposing team's end zone.
Players can't run with the disc and there is no contact between players, but its still quite physical. The action is almost non-stop, with players going to extremes to catch the disc.
OU has its own ultimate team called the Apes of Wrath. These men and women train four days a week to become the "ultimate" Ultimate Frisbee team.
"The sport started at a high school in the late '60s," said team coach Scott Croshier, a University College academic counselor. "At this point, it's a full-on intercollegiate sport with over 250 teams."
Croshier started coaching the team last year, helping to get it organized and bringing its level of competitiveness up to what it is today.
"Over the past year, we've really picked things up," Croshier said. He explained that they recruit players in the fall and play competitively in the spring.
Just because the team has already been established already this season and is now playing in tournaments does not mean that they aren't looking for players.
Architecture senior John Campbell is a senior member of the team and has seen it grow into what it is today.
"Anybody can come out any time they want," Campbell said. "If you want to play for your school on a high level and have fun, we're open to anyone." "We practice three days a week, plus condition another," team captain Bryan Paris said. "Absolutely everybody is welcome."
Persons interested in playing ultimate can contact Paris by email at bcoupari@ou.edu or may show up at the practices.
