Column - Romantic DVDs a safe bet for Valentine's Day
by   |  February 10, 2003  |

Whether an excuse to snuggle up on the couch with your lovemuffin, a reason to not talk to your worse half for 90 minutes or an opportunity to laugh and cry with single friends about something other than your own lives, movies can be a great way to spend the Valentine's Day evening. The following lists are designed to allow you to use lovey-dovey movies to your advantage, depending on your current relationships or moods.
Newly released: "Sweet Home Alabama" was the movie this reviewer deemed the best romantic comedy of last year. The DVD offers an alternate ending and deleted scenes. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is the number one romantic comedy of all time. Enough said. "Beauty and the Beast," is not your Disney version re-released for the fifteenth time. This is the black-and-white, French version made in 1947 that is more seductive and sophisticated than sweet and adorable.
Girls' night: "Bridget Jones' Diary" shows that even when a girl is completely out of control of her love life, cupid can still ambush her. "Pretty Woman" is an old faithful flick in any girl's arsenal of romantic quote-along movies. "The Sweetest Thing" is the bad girl's movie guide to getting a guy.
Classic: "Sabrina," either with Humphrey Bogart of Harrison Ford, reminds the viewer that love is often found in unexpected places. "Say Anything..." With John Cusack starring, Cameron Crowe directing, and plenty of deleted and extended scenes, this DVD can bring both movie nostalgia and new experiences. "When Harry Met Sally" shows Meg Ryan when cutesy was still tolerable and a that best friends will often make best lovers, too. The DVD also comes with a "Making Of" documentary.
Funny: "So I Married an Axe Murderer" shows Mike Myers before 'Do I make you horny, baby?' was considered romantic, and delivers a movie that is sincerely sweet, original and hilarious. "The Wedding Singer" combines Adam Sandler, Billy Idol and a Boy George wannabe, in an adorable plot. "Groundhog Day" leaves behind any traditional framework for romantic comedy (like linear time) and presents Bill Murray in classic funny form.
hello there & you too
