Caribbean Filmmaker to Present Film at OU
by   |  February 5, 2003  |

In celebration of Black History Month, OU's film and video studies program will host a Caribbean filmmaker Wednesday night in Meacham Auditorium at the Oklahoma Memorial Union.
Andrew Millington will show and discuss his film "Guttaperc" at 7 p.m., said Andrew Horton, director of film and video studies.
Millington's films show the experiences of people of African descent in the Diaspora. He has worked on numerous industry films as well as independent films, such as the film "SANKOFA," a famous independent film about slavery.
His approach emphasizes social, political and communal perspectives rather than the perspective of the isolated individual, English professor Catherine John said.
Horton said he enjoys showing all types of films from mainstream to foreign.
"There is a whole world of film to celebrate," he said. "Movies have an important impact on people."
Darrell Mashia, fine arts sophomore, said the screenings are beneficial since they show the works of people across the world.
"I think the screenings are a good thing," Mashia said. "People in different areas can give different insights into their profession."
Paul Bell, dean of the Arts and Sciences College, said the film screenings show people in the Oklahoma City area films they may not see otherwise.
"Film and video studies is helping the university become a place where people can see films from other countries," Bell said. "It is remarkable how many people are interested in film."
