Maybe I'm Just a Nerd
by   |  September 15, 2002  |

I do not like to think of myself as nerdy. I do not consider myself a loser. Not to say Im little miss everything, but I like to think I have some social skills and some idea of what is in these days. But lately I have had to question my judgment and reevaluate myself. Maybe I am a nerd and I do not know it.

They say that you can judge a persons character by looking at their friends. They say birds of a feather flock together. Well, if this is the case, then I must be a nerd in disguise.

I have made the realization that my friends are probably the biggest bunch of nerds walking the planet. Classify something as nerdy, and they probably like it. Reality is just a figment of their imaginations.

They spend their days playing games. They have three (or maybe it is now four), gaming systems in their rooms. They spend hours upon hours in front of the TV only getting up for the occasional food or potty run. When they are in this state of total gaming, girls are not even of interest of them. Well, except for the occasional hooker they pick up in Grand Theft Auto 3. A true nerd places games before girls.

I can enter their room, carry on a one-sided conversation with myself, and leave. The next day they might ask, Hey Jac, how come you dont ever come by and see us? People, life outside the dorm, fresh air and food that has not been microwaved What are these aliens you speak of?

But it does not stop there. No, they know every fact, date, and useless bit of information there is to know about characters such as the Incredible Hulk, Spiderman, Indiana Jones, Neo, and Harry Potter. They know information your typical fan would not know. They go way beyond the realm of fan, to super fan a.k.a. NERD!

While most guys can go on and on about cars, they can go on and on about computers. While most guys fantasize about supermodels, they fantasize about anime girls.

They tease and quiz me over things I do not know. I get so confused; Is it Bruce Banner or David Banner? I thought it was Bruce Campbell. I get so very, very confused. And dont ask me questions such as how many Star War movies there are, or when the next Matrix is coming out. And I dont know a thing about how cool Dues Ex is or how lame Warcraft III is.

Yet they insist on asking me all the time. If only I cared, maybe I could remember. The truth is, I do not. I do not care about video games, computers, superheros and secret identities. I am a girl, not a guy, so why should I care? And on top of that, I am not a nerd. Sure, Ive been known to do some nerdy things in my days, but we all have our moments, do we not? Its like that Weezer song, If everyones a little queer why cant she be a little straight? Well, if we are all a little nerdy, why cant they be a little cool?

So now I ask myself. If I hang out with nerds all the time, what does that make me? Maybe it makes me a nerd or maybe it makes me look super cool. I do not really know and I guess I do not really care.

I've learned more about superheroes and video games then I ever thought possible. Did you know that Batman has had three different Robins? Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake. Deep down I'm glad I know all this useless trivia, but I could never admit to that, because that would *gasp * qualify me as a nerd.
