Sutton series tuned up for fall season at OU
by   |  September 12, 2002  |

The OU School of Music's new fall schedule for the Sutton Artist and Concert Series features a variety of accomplished musicians, from professors to gathered ensembles, at OU.

The series began its commencement Monday evening with an oboe performance from Sally Faulconer, OU associate professor of oboe and coordinator of undergraduate studies.

Accompanied by Howard Lubin on piano and Carl Rath on bassoon, Faulconer played "Trio for Piano, Oboe and Bassoon" by Andre Previn and "Sonate" by Cesar Franck, a piece originally written for the violin that Faulconer adapted for the oboe.

Her reputation as a supreme lyricist on the oboe has been firmly established in concerts from coast to coast and in such international areas as Venezuela, Austria, Germany and England.

Faulconer is also principal oboist with Accademia Filarmonica and a former member of Oklahoma City Philharmonic and Norman Chamber Orchestra.

A co-director of the Master Performers Series, which invites international artists to perform recitals and present classes at OU, Faulconer has been invited to perform with such renowned oboists as Rudolph Vrbsky, Ray Still and Richard Killmer on their respective recitals.

She first came to the Norman community in August 1988.

Sutton Artist Series features the talented OU artist-faculty in recitals of solo literature and chamber music.

"The Sutton Series concerts are an excellent opportunity for students to view the faculty in a performance, rather than classroom setting," said Shane Harris, coordinator of audience development for the OU School of Music. "It's a chance for students and Norman residents alike to see the talent that OU has to offer."

The schedule for the remainder of the series is as follows: Gregory Sauer, cello, 3 p.m., Sept. 15; Carl Rath, bassoon, Sept. 16; Jeongwon Ham, piano, Sept. 21, Paul F. Sharp Concert Hall; Quartet Oklahoma, Nov. 20, Paul F. Sharp Concert Hall. All performances are at 8 p.m. in Morris R. Pitman Recital Hall in Catlett Music Center unless otherwise noted.
