Daily's homecoming coverage did not live up to student paper obligations

To the editor:

I was highly disappointed that history was made at Homecoming 2002, and all the student paper came up with was that one-eighth of a page, black-and-white bio of the two winners. What history was made, you ask? TWO ETHNIC MINORITY CANDIDATES (Mr. Wilmer Hoffman being Latino and Ms. Sarah Hodge being Native-American) WON THE HOMECOMING ROYALTY!

I wonder how this was overlooked by our student newspaper. Was The Daily not at homecoming festivities? Perhaps The Daily simply did not care. I sincerely hope the latter is is not the case. Regardless of The Daily's EXCUSE, the coverage of our homecoming royalty was pathetic at best, veiled racism at worst. And quite frankly, the STUDENTS of the University of Oklahoma that won Homecoming deserved better from our STUDENT newspaper.

For what it's worth Mr. Hoffman and Ms. Hodge, CONGRATULATIONS for being named King and Queen, respectively, of the University of Oklahoma's 2002 Homecoming. Hopefully you will see this letter and realize students at OU do care about your victories, regardless of the message the lack of coverage from The Daily may have sent.
