Emily Clarkson had a feeling she probably wouldn't go to the OU/Texas game in Dallas this weekend. But she bought a student ticket anyway and now has an extra $190.
Clarkson, biochemistry junior, said she sold her original $60 ticket located in the "nosebleed" section of the Cotton Bowl for $250 last week. Along with several other OU students, Clarkson said she has profited big from selling an OU/Texas ticket.
"I almost expected to sell it for more," Clarkson said. "Some of the rich alumni will buy it for whatever you ask for it."
Tyson Curtis, energy management junior, said he was going to use his student ticket to attend the game, but offers for his 50-yard line ticket were too high to resist. Curtis and eight of his friends, who had neighboring seats, sold their tickets for $550 each to Texas Tickets in Dallas.
"I never planned on selling my ticket, but I was willing to give it up for $550," Curtis said.
Curtis has attended the OU/Texas game for the past two years and he will still attend this year's game, he said. His brother and sister-in-law gave him their tickets.
"I really don't agree with (selling tickets)," Curtis said. "Students should be at the game to support the team."
However, many students seem to have no problem not attending the game in order to make a profit. Advertisements such as "Texas Ticket -- $200," "Single OU/Texas ticket (great seat) -- $250," and "Please, no bids below $300" filled 15 pages of the Sooner Information Network's Virtual Market Wednesday.
Students aren't the only ones who know how profitable OU/Texas tickets can be. Shawn Norman, owner of Totally Tickets, said his business is buying tickets from OU sorority and fraternity members and expecting to sell them to customers for $200 to $500 each.
"If OU were playing better, it would be a better ticket," Norman said.
Tickets this year are selling for $50 to $100 more than last year because both teams are undefeated, Norman said. Also, more people are interested in buying tickets this year than in previous years. Throughout this week, Totally Tickets has been receiving about 150 calls each day from customers wanting to buy OU/Texas tickets.
"If that many people are spending that much on fun, it's got to be worth it," Norman said.
