NYC choreographer comes to OU campus
by   |  October 3, 2002  |

An international choreographer will offer people a sneak peek rehearsal of one of the Modern Repertory Dance Theatre's spring performances at 2 p.m. today in room 305 of the OU Fine Arts Center.

Brian Brooks traveled from his home in New York City to choreograph a ballet that he created especially for the OU School of Dance.

"It's about the basics -- love, loss and the acceptance of inner love," Brooks said.

Brooks said he chose songs by Bjork for this ballet. Because of the texture of the music, he does not use the traditional choreographing method of counting to the beat.

Karen Boyd, modern dance graduate student, said this method makes the choreography easier to follow.

"The movements are all in the music," Boyd said. "He just listens to the music piece and does it with a lot of feeling."

Boyd and the other dancers in Brooks' ballet have been practicing night and day for the past couple weeks.

"He knows exactly what he wants," Boyd said.

When Brooks graduated high school, he already knew that he wanted a career in dance. He did not go to college, but went directly to Philadanco School of Dance in Philadelphia. Following his dance training, he danced professionally in Chicago.

Boyd said Brooks' real world experience deepens her learning with him.

"He can pull from so many different experiences and venues," Boyd said.

Brooks said he hopes to return to OU in the spring to see the premiere of his ballet.
