Tired of visiting the language lab or thumbing through your Italian-English dictionary?
Well, skip the lab and toss out that well-thumbed dictionary and pop around to Oklahoma Memorial Union tonight.
Two critically acclaimed international films will be screened tonight in the union's Meacham Auditorium as part of the Union Program Board's International Film Festival, which began last Sunday.
The Danish film "Italian for Beginners" will be screened at 6 tonight and the Indian comedy "Monsoon Wedding" will follow at 8 p.m.
Films already shown in the series include the "Amelie," "Brotherhood of the Wolf," and "Chungking Express."
The movies chosen for the series represent some of the best international films of the past few years, said Danika Hines, a programming assistant for the UPB.
Film recommendations were taken from OU's international students for the the festival's viewing schedule. Award winning or nominated titles and work from renowned directors were also researched for selection.
Hines said the purpose of the film series is to offer students an opportunity to see films that normally could not be seen on the big screen in the area.
"All the films can be rented on video or DVD but it's not the same as watching them on 35 mm in a theater," Hines said.
Mike Garretson, international area studies sophomore, said the screenings give students a break from the rigmarole of the winding down semester.
"The films are cool because they get people out of their ruts," Garretson said.
European studies junior Erica Sexton said the International Film Festival is a great complement to the language skills that students are learning in class.
"International films are important for those learning a language," Sexton said. "They give you a cultural perspective that sometimes is difficult to get out of text books."
Both films "Italian for Beginners" and "Monsoon Wedding" are in their original language with English subtitles. Admission is free.
Events and screenings for UPB's next International Film Festival is tentatively scheduled for March 3 and 4.
