HIT
To the new ATM in Cate Center. Considering how many students without meal plans use the C-Store and other restaurants, it made perfect sense to give them access to cash without forcing them to walk to Oklahoma Memorial Union, Walker or Adams Center.
MISS
To the nation's terrorist alert system. Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge has said that we have to look at the costs associated with elevating our status level to "high" risk in light of recent threats. We've got an alarm system that we can't afford to turn on. Great.
HIT
To the Navy, which has agreed to scale back testing of a new sonar system that could harass or kill sea mammals. In a compromise between the government and ecological protesters, the Navy will hold off testing for seven months while its operating permit is challenged in court.
HIT
To the abolition of "free speech zones" at West Virginia University. The zones composed less than 5 percent of the campus and were the only places that students were allowed to protest or otherwise voice their opinions. The revised policy drops the zones and allows much more freedom for students to express their views.
MISS
To a computer error in OU's online UOSA elections. The glitch allowed some students to vote in more than one election, and four elections will have to be handled in a special election scheduled this week.
HIT
To the UOSA 2002 election commission. While we fault the system itself, we have to give credit to the students and their work to minimize the impact of the computer error and get a solution in place as quickly as possible.
HIT
To the state's new capitol dome. Though all but $1.5 million of the construction was paid for with private funds, the naming rights weren't sold to anybody. For that $1.5 million, an inscription for "The people of Oklahoma" is included on the ring of honor.
MISS
To delays in a salvage operation of an oil tanker off the coast of Spain. If the storm-damaged tanker is not dealt with promptly, it could break apart and cause an oil spill twice as large as the Exxon Valdez.
