Tackling a new 'Gig'
by   |  November 8, 2002  |

The No. 1 ranked Sooners (8-0, 4-0) will play their eighth nationally televised game of the season Saturday when OU travels to College Station, Texas, to face the Aggies of Texas A&M (5-4, 2-3). Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Kyle Field and the game will be televised by ABC, KOCO Channel 5 and Cox Channel 8 locally.

The broadcasters for the game will be Brad Nessler, play-by-play, Bob Griese, color commentary, and Lynn Swann, sideline reporter.

The Sooners have had two home games in a row and will be playing a game on the road for the first time in nearly a month. Kyle field seats 82,600 people and has been described as one of the toughest stadiums to travel to in the country.

"It will be great to play there for the first time," sophomore defensive lineman Tommie Harris said. "I really don't worry about the surroundings when I play -- just the guy in front of me. We just need to stay focused and not let the crowd affect the game."

Sophomore offensive lineman Wes Sims said the atmosphere at Kyle Field is very unique.

"It's definitely an intimidating place down there," Sims said. "They have a lot of great fans and tradition. We are just going to go in there with the same frame of mind that we have here."

Historically, Texas A&M has been known as a grind-it-out, time-control, defensive-minded team. This year, things have changed. Under a new offensive coordinator and a new quarterback, the Aggies are spreading the field out more and putting up more points.

"They are spreading it out and throwing it more, but they can still run it effectively," OU football head coach Bob Stoops said. "They are a very talented group of players. We're excited about another big challenge this week."

Texas A&M is averaging 30.6 points and 388 total yards a game this season. The Aggies are led by sophomore quarterback Dustin Long. Long has completed 51.1 percent of his pass attempts for 2,016 yards and 17 touchdowns.

"Long has been very good," Stoops said. "He throws a nice ball. He has been very productive and he is throwing to some good athletes."

Defensively, the Aggies are holding opponents to 17.9 points and 311.9 total yards a game. Texas A&M has created 26 turnovers this season and is plus-11 in the turnover margin.

The Aggies have once again been successful at stopping the run, an area the Sooners have depended on the last few games. Texas A&M has held opponents to 114.9 rushing yards a game while the Sooners have rushed for 175.8 yards a game. Sims said the Sooners need to win the battle up front.

"We always go in there thinking we will be successful running against anybody," Sims said. "We've built up a lot of confidence. We still have a lot we need to work on though."

The Aggies have a strong front four that is led by senior defensive end Ty Warren. Warren has 45 tackles, 10 for a loss of yards, four sacks, six quarterback hurries and has blocked two kicks.

"Both their defensive ends are great," Sims said. "They definitely have a lot of talent. I don't care what their record is. They are still a great team with great athletes."
