Players respond to survey picks
by   |  July 25, 2002  |

"Of course there are a lot of high expectations, but we have high expectations of our own. Being picked No. 1 doesn't add any more pressure than we already put on ourselves," said Matt McCoy.

McCoy, the junior defensive back from Jenks said that he is confident about what lies ahead for the Sooners. He has made his most expansive gains in speed, strength and conditioning during this summer's workouts.

McCoy has had the opportunity for some fun. He recently went fishing with Jimmy Houston and Oklahoma State's Rashaun Woods at a lake near Inola. McCoy said that it was definitely a great experience to fish with one of the best fishermen there is. He described Houston of the "Shaquille O'Neal of fishing."

"Although its hot out we have a lot of unfinished business that keeps us motivated for the upcoming season. I just think back to the OSU game and feel the disappointment, then focus it to make improvements," McCoy said. "Our whole secondary is made up of unbelievable athletes. (Including defensive backs Andre Woolfolk and Derrick Strait who received pre-season honors), Brandon Everage is also one of the hardest hitters on defense and probably the funniest guy on the team. So that takes care of a lot."

Tommie Harris has been selected the preseason defensive player of the year. McCoy describes Harris as an incredible athlete and admits that everyone has grown very accustomed to him making big plays.

Lance Mitchell has been named the top newcomer. The linebacker from Los Banos, Calif. is considered on of the prize picks from coming out of junior college rankings. During the 2001 season Mitchell had 80 tackles, five sacks, one interception and one fumble touchdown while playing at City college of San Fransico.

McCoy sighs and agrees with the pick again. "Lance is big, strong, fast, he is real similar to Torrence Marshall."

Last but not least McCoy has things to say about Teddy Lehman being on of the hardest working guys on the team.

"Teddy has really matured and been picking up the slack where we have lost Rocky. He's a great leader. Our team has a lot to look forward to this season with or without the preseason ranking being what it is."
