The Department of Medicine will have a new home after the OU Board of Regents approved the contract to renovate space in the Williams Pavilion.
The regents approved the contract to J.L. Walker Construction Inc. for $287,397 to renovate areas of the first floor of the Williams Pavilion to move the departments under the College of Medicine to a centralized location.
J.L. Walker Construction Inc. outbid 10 other companies for the contract. The highest bid was $344,900.
OUHSC Provost Joseph Ferretti and Dr. Dewayne Andrews, dean of the College of Medicine, told the Board of Regents of the need to move the department.
Ferretti said that when the OU Physicians building was constructed, clinics spread across campus were relocated to the building.
"This space provides (the same) opportunity," for the College of Medicine, Ferretti said. This is the first in a series of moves.
Jeff Hickman, OU press secretary, said the move would be like if the Department of Marketing was in Dale Hall, while the Michael F. Price College of Business is located in Adams Hall.
Robie Herman, OUHSC Student Association Senate chairman, said the department is a part of the College of Medicine, one of the two largest colleges at OUHSC.
The department's main function is to train primary care physicians, preparing them as clinicians, educators and scientists, according to the message from Dr. Michael S. Bronze, chairman of the department, on its Web site.
Ferretti and Andrews said this was the first of a series of moves to bring all the departments together.
The regents also approved the addition of two courses to the OUHSC calendar. The courses, Clinical Endodontics III and Nuclear Medicine Lab Regulations and Accreditation, were added because of students interest and a need to fill curricula deficiencies, according to the regents agenda. Ferretti said the courses will be added in the spring semester.
Thirty-three classes were removed from the calendar, including 16 listed as Special Studies classes. The regents' agenda stated the courses needed to be deleted to remove course duplication.
The regents also approved a professional service agreement between the OUHSC and the OU Medical Center and revised the faculty handbook.
