Sooners run toward Iowa
by   |  April 25, 2002  |

The OU track and field team has had other things to deal with besides its opponents during the outdoor track season, like the weather for example.

The Sooners had their first dry meet of the outdoor season at the Michael Johnson Southwestern Bell Classic last weekend in Baylor, Texas, said Jill Lancaster, OU track and field co-head coach.

"It showed," Lancaster said about the Sooners' performance in their first non-weather-affected meet.

The Sooners won three events.

OU sophomore Aldwyn Sappleton met the NCAA provisional mark in the 800-meter with a time of 1:48.87, good for second place. Meeting the provisional mark gives Sappleton a chance to attend the NCAA championships in May at Baton Rouge, La., depending on the number of runners who have met the NCAA automatic qualifying mark.

Junior Tiffany Davis won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, running a 1:01.67. Davis also finished third in the 100-meter hurdles, and junior Raoul Harvey won the 400-meter dash in 47.10, his best finish to date. Sophomore Kelli O'Rourke also had a career best finish, winning the 800-meter in 2:14.69.

The wet stuff showed up at the Sooners' previous outdoor meets and delayed their first and only home meet during the John Jacobs Invitational on April 13.

The Sooners expect good weather at their next meet at the Drake Relays held today through Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.

OU had 23 members who qualified to attend the relays.

OU sophomore pole vaulter Leslie Dunlap will compete in the second heat against 31 pole vaulters.

"She has helped carry the team," Lancaster said.

OU junior LaKisha Robinson will participate in the 4 x 400, spring medley and 4 x 100 relays. Robinson competed in nationals as a freshman, Lancaster said.

Track and field members who didn't attend the Drake Relays went to the University of North Texas on Wednesday.
