Our View: Respectful of a religion, but militarily sound

The Islamic holy month of Ramadan starts on Nov. 17. Muslim countries are wary of the possibility of continuing the bombings and ground war into this month. The possibility of losing support from Middle Eastern and Muslim nations is real.

There have been calls from Muslim countries to end the fighting before the month of Ramadan. If this can be done, it should be done, on the sound principle that this war should end as soon as possible. If it can't be completed by then, it seems politically naive and possibly a military mistake to take a break from the fighting to avoid offending al-Qaida
