Travel agents work over Spring break
by   |  March 15, 2001  |

While OU students are partying in Las Vegas and Cancun, Mexico, next week, Mary Kaye Park will still be working in Oklahoma Memorial Union. She does not get a break, even though she helped them get to their destination.

As manager of Bentley Hedges Travel in the union, Park has worked all year to help students enjoy their spring break.

"We've had people planning since August and September," she said.

But her work doesn't end once spring break arrives. Some students were still looking for hotels Thursday.

Travel consultant Sandra Sites said people still come to her for help even during spring break.

"Last year, it didn't slow down at all," she said.

Park said that between 10 and 15 people come to Bentley Hedges Travel every day looking for assistance in planning their trips.

Jeramiah Hartman, business junior, said he and his girlfriend wanted to do something big this year for spring break. He said they have been planning for their trip to Cancun since November.

"We started planning really early," he said.

He heard about Bentley Hedges from friends. Since Bentley Hedges is located in the union, he could easily walk in after class.

Nelson Pham, management information systems senior, started planning for his trip to Las Vegas two months ago. While walking through the union he saw the office and walked in.

Sandra Sites said she constantly helps students travel to Las Vegas and Cancun. She gets attached to the students she helps, she said, and they often come into the offices to hang out.

Park said after spring break she helps people plan for summer vacations.

"We just change gears, change destinations," she said.

Students travel inside the United States during spring break, Park said. But during the summer students are looking to travel overseas. France, Italy and Germany are popular summer destinations.

Once school starts again, Park begins helping plan Christmas vacations for students.

"It never, ever stops," she said.
