Sooners avenge early loss to Tech
by   |  March 7, 2001  |

If revenge is best served cold, then the OU men's basketball team was right on the money with its 80-72 win over Texas Tech on Wednesday night.

The No. 21 Sooners were definitely cold, shooting only 37.3 percent from the floor. But OU got its revenge for a last-second 60-59 loss at Texas Tech on Jan. 16.

The win puts the Sooners' record at 18-4 and 7-3 in the conference.

Inside Lloyd Noble Center in front of 9,847 fans, junior forward Daryan Selvy led the Sooners in the second half with 12 points off the bench.

"The huge positive that we take out of this game is the way Daryan Selvy played," OU men's basketball head coach Kelvin Sampson said."Overall, we had a poor shooting game and still won."

Selvy finished the night 6 of 8 from the field with 12 rebounds, his second double-double of the season.

"I wanted to win this game bad," Selvy said."I did all of the little things tonight."

Junior guard J.R. Raymond had a game-high 19 points, his fifth straight game with at least 15 points, including a jump shot as time expired.

Texas Tech shot a blistering 56.5 percent from the field in the first half, and went into the locker room trailing the Sooners 37-35.

A combination of a better OU defense and foul trouble held Texas Tech to a slightly more human 41.4 percent shooting in second half, but the Sooners weren't able to hold the lead.

The Sooners took the lead with 17:02 remaining in the first half, and led until the 19:04 mark in the second half. The lead would change hands four more times before the two-minute mark, then a Selvy put-back and a Raymond 3-pointer gave the mostly quiet crowd some life and the Sooners the lead for good.

"We work so hard on clock management," Sampson said."But J.R.'s decision to take that three wasn't real high up on my smartness list."

The Sooners out-rebounded the Red Raiders 47-26 overall and 26-10 offensively, enough to give OU its sixth consecutive win.

"The intensity level that OU brought to the court hurt us and they killed us on the offensive glass," Texas Tech head coach James Dickey said."We really didn't play well down the stretch."

Texas Tech forward Jayson Mitchell led the Red Raiders with 16 points, 12 in the second half, and shot 50 percent from 3-point range.

Since defeating the Sooners in Lubbock, Texas, on Jan. 16, the Red Raiders have lost four straight games, falling to 8-11 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

"Coaching friends around the nation are telling me what a tough league we have," Sampson said."A lot of people would love to be 18-4."

OU goes on the road to play the Texas Longhorns at 8 p.m. Saturday in Austin, Texas.
