Faculty Senate to discuss prep week
by   |  January 21, 2001  |

The Faculty Senate will meet Monday to discuss a pre-finals week proposal that has been in work for two years, said UOSA President Chris Kannady.

The proposed policy would give students two days free from assignments during the week before finals. The policy would impact most faculty on only one day if they have a Tuesday/Thursday schedule or a Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule, according to the journal of the Faculty Senate.

Last December, Kannady said that according to current policy, an assignment worth 90 percent of the grade could be due the week before finals as long as it was announced 30 days ahead of time.

Nothing worth more than 10 percent could be due the last week of class with this new policy, said Al Schwarzkopf, chairman-elect, in December.

The Executive Committee told student leaders last year that it was willing to consider a policy that would make it easier to study going into finals.

Kannady, letters senior, said the proposal stems from two years of work towards a resolution between students and faculty.

Sheena Murphy spoke for the Executive Committee last December to show the student leaders that there was concern for the students, but that the faculty would be greatly affected by a dead week.

Professor Murphy said the committee thought this was a good- faith effort to address the needs of the students but not to impose on faculty too much.

"Flexibility is built into the proposal because not all courses have lecture and quiz formats," according to the journal. "Any deviations would have to be clearly stated in the course syllabus and be approved by the chair of the department through which the course is offered."

The policy would exclude make-up examinations and tests, lab exams and class meeting once a week.

Violations of the policy could be brought to the attention of the chair of the department and could be grounds for a grade appeal.

The Senate meeting will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Jacobson Faculty Hall, room 102, and is open to the public.
