Student groups stress safe sex during National Condom Week
by   |  February 12, 2001  |

Love is in the air for Valentine's Day, and with that comes safe sex education.

Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma, along with the OU Women's Studies Honor Society is passing out condoms at today's performance of the "Vagina Monologues" as a part of National Condom Week.

They will also have a table at the Oklahoma Memorial Union all week to distribute condoms and informational brochures, according to Planned Parenthood.

"At the table, a big basket of condoms is put out, and it is refilled several times a day," said Laura Lang, Planned Parenthood director of external affairs, "A lot of people take advantage of this opportunity."

All week, local Planned Parenthood centers will hold a "guess the number of condoms in the jar" contest, and will have free condoms, candy and Just Wear It bumper stickers.

"Through our activities during National Condom Week, we hope to show that it's okay to talk about condoms, and that condom use should be the norm and not the exception," Terry Dennison said in a press release. He is the director of educational services of Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma.

Increased condom use can reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted infection among sexually active teens, according to Planned Parenthood. This is because they prevent the exchange of body fluids.

Condoms are also an inexpensive and effective form of birth control, according to Planned Parenthood. Condoms are also recognized as a highly effective barrier against HIV infection.

"If kids are going to do it anyway, you may as well help them be safe," said Monica Gaines, psychology senior.
