Norman has reduced its crime rate over the past seven years despite an apparent increase in drug activity.
While drug arrests skyrocketed nearly 400 percent from 1994 to last year, other forms of crime have dropped. FBI crime statistics showed marked drops in rape, auto theft, assault and battery, larceny and weapons violations among others.
The increase in drug arrests does not necessarily reflect an increase of drug activity, said Detective Gary Schmidt of the Norman Police Department. The rising arrest rate has to do with more undercover investigations, tips and most important, the department
