KANSAS CITY, Mo. -The No. 7 OU women's basketball team may not have won the Big 12 Tournament, but a No. 2 seed in the West Regional of the NCAA Tournament isn't a bad consolation prize.
OU women's basketball head coach Sherri Coale said she isn't disappointed about not being a No. 1 seed.
"I thought we were realistically a long shot at a No. 1 seed," Coale said. "We go in a No. 2 seed, and we're happy about that."
OU will play the No. 15 seed, Oral Roberts University, at Lloyd Noble Center Saturday. ORU is 20-10 on the season, and the champions of the Mid-Continent Conference.
The Sooners have met ORU once on the season in the Bertha Teague Classic. OU won that matchup 87-56.
The other two teams paired on the Sooners' side of the bracket will be No. 7 seed George Washington and No. 10 seed Stanford.
The Sooners' No. 2 seed is the highest seed the women have received in the program's history.
"I thought we had a great run from a very rough league," Coale said.
Coale apparently isn't the only one thinking that the Big 12 is a rough league. The NCAA selection committee thought so too - seven schools from the Big 12 made the field of 64, the most from any conference.
The other Big 12 schools to qualify for the tournament were Baylor, Missouri, Texas, Iowa State, Texas Tech and Colorado.
Coale said she believes the conference can be successful in the tournament.
"I think one of us can make the Final Four."
