Grant likes new role in Diary
by   |  April 2, 2001  |

NEW YORK - It's no more Mr. Nice Guy for Hugh Grant.

The actor said he was happy to play a character he describes as a ''cad, liar, cheat, philanderer'' in the upcoming film adaptation of the best-selling novel, Bridget Jones' Diary.

''It's a huge relief to me,'' Grant said Monday on NBC's Today show. ''I've done way too many nice-guy parts in the last few years. I was sick of it. I think everyone else was sick of it.''

The screenplay comes from Richard Curtis, who also was behind 1999's Notting Hill and 1994's Four Weddings and a Funeral, both of which co-starred Grant in sensitive, self-effacing roles.

The actor said he was thrilled to play the boss of Bridget Jones, played by Renee Zellweger, because he loves the book by Helen Fielding on which the film is based.

The novel follows the dating traumas of a thirtysomething London woman.

''I've had the book down on my top five list of funniest books,'' Grant said. ''It's probably not cool for a guy to like it that much.''
