Jazz in June begins Thursday
by   |  June 22, 1999  |

The much heralded local summer ritual of music and food that is Jazz in June begins Thursday, and runs through Saturday.
In its 15th year, the festival, which is free and open to the public, features the best of local musicians and world renowned performers.
Although some seating is provided, it's suggested that attendees bring lawn chairs for the outdoor events.
Festival goers, in addition to being treated to live music under the stars, will have an opportunity to buy hats, T-shirts and a variety of food and drink at the events.
Even though the festival focuses on jazz in its many forms, it isn't the only musical genre to be featured. There's a taste of blues, some swing and even a little reggae.
Thursday's performances are being dubbed "Blues Under The Stars," and feature local favorites Scott Keaton and the Deviants and Mississippi blues legend Smokey Wilson.
Friday showcases the jazz fusion stylings of D-Lux Vortex, the Norman High School Jazz Choir and the Dallas Jazz Orchestra playing big band and swing. The DJO recently received a Grammy nomination for its album. Both performances begin at 7 p.m. in Brookhaven Village.
From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m Saturday., the music moves away from the heat to the Sooner Theatre on Main Street. Featured artists include acoustic jazz guitarist Edgar Cruz and the Doug Talley Quartet. Later, the musicians take to Andrews Park from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Performers include rising young blues guitarist Big G, the Stephen Fulton Quintet, the Freddie Bryant Quintet and reggae band Cryout.
The closing festivities will be held at the Norman Holiday Inn at 11 p.m. It's being slated as a jam session and will feature the Phil Mitchell Quartet with invited guest artists.
