Comic book show comes to Norman
by   |  June 4, 1999  |

Norman will have its own comic convention Saturday, and 5 percent of the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross to aid victims of the May 3 tornadoes.

Norman's Finest Comics and Collectibles Show will be held at the Super 8 Motel, 2600 W. Main St., on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be approximately 30 dealers at the show, selling thousands of items including comic books, toys, dolls, beanies and even children's books.

The convention was put together by Matt Price, owner of Speeding Bullet Books and Comics, 614 N. Porter Ave.

"We haven't had a comic convention (in Norman) in years and years. We wanted to show metro area fans how much Norman has to offer, not only in collectibles, but also in local talent. We also wanted a chance to give back to the community," Price said.

Author Mel Odom, of Moore, will be at the show to sign autographs and answer fans' questions. Odom has written the novel Blade, based on the movie, and an upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer novel, along with other science-fiction novels and gaming manuals.

There will also be door prizes, contests, gaming tournaments and an auction. The auction includes lithographs, prints, original art, toys and rare back-issues.

The auction will benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, an organization that tries to protect the First Amendment rights of the comic industry, including creators and retailers.

Discount tickets are available at Speeding Bullet Books and Comics for $2. Tickets at the door are $3 for adults and $1 for children ages 10 and under.
