Robotics designer joins OU faculty
by   |  July 16, 1999  |

One of the most internationally distinguished robotics designers will soon join the faculty of the OU College of Engineering.
David Miller accepted a position teaching and researching robotical and mechanical engineering said Director of the School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Harold Stalford.
Miller is well known in his field for developing small planetary rovers. His most accomplished project was a mobile robot he designed for NASA that was used in the 1997 exploration of the Mars surface. The Mars Pathfinder Rover exploration was the first time a robot landed on an extraterristrial surface.
"He has made a very significant impact on planetary exploration," Stalford said.
As of recent Miller has acted as the Technical Director for the KISS Institute for Practical Robotics (KIPR) in Reston, Va.
In his work with students he has helped distribute robotic kits that are built by students with the assistance of people in the robotics field. These robots are then taken to robotic competitions called Botball Tournaments.
"Miller has a deep, passionate love for teaching and that was one of the reasons he was drawn to the university. He will teach and continue his robotic research while at OU," said Stalford.
