Demand high for Notre Dame tickets
by   |  July 6, 1999  |

In 1957, OU's 47-game winning streak ended with an upset 7-0 loss to Notre Dame.

The Sooners went more than four years without a loss until they met the Irish.

OU's only win over Notre Dame came in 1956, when the Sooners shut the Irish out 40-0 and went on to win the national championship under head coach Bud Wilkinson.

OU's new head coach, Bob Stoops, will take the Sooners to South Bend, Ind., to play the Fighting Irish Oct. 2 for the first time since 1968.

"We are fortunate to play a team of Oklahoma's caliber," said Perry Baert, Notre Dame athletic ticket manager. "We always look for a traditional matchup with good competition."

OU received only 5,000 seats from Notre Dame, said Tom Blubaugh, OU athletic ticket manager.

"We had over 8,000 ticket requests for this game," Blubaugh said.

With the tradition behind the two programs, this game will offer the older fans a meaningful game, Blubaugh said. Given the amount of seating compared to requests, OU started selling tickets to students first.

The ticket office then opened tickets up to athletic donors. Finally, OU offered tickets to non-donors who continuously purchase season tickets and based their eligibility on years of purchase, Blubaugh said.

Bryan Colvin, letters sophomore, said many students will be traveling together to share in the excitement of the game.

"It is going to be a huge game with tradition, It will be a fun road trip with all my fraternity brothers," Colvin said.
