OU wrestling squad ties fourth-ranked Iowa State
The fifth-ranked OU wrestling squad tied Big 12 foe Iowa State, the fourth-ranked team in the country, 18-18 this weekend. The match began with Michael Lightner and Jared Frayer's victories, giving OU an early 7-0 lead. The dual continued with two successive losses by David Kjeldgaard and Rodney Jones, both to nationally ranked opponents, to run the score to 7-6. OU had only three more wins, with Michael Barger, John Henry Ward and Shane Valdez winning their matches. The Sooners record stands at 10-3-1. Sooner women's hoops team loses to Longhorns
The women's basketball team continued their losing streak on the road when they lost to Texas on Saturday 81-73. The loss drops OU's road record to 0-6. Head coach Sherri Coale said before the game OU would have to limit the number of offensive rebounds Texas pulled down. The Sooners didn't accomplish that goal, allowing Texas to have 20 offensive rebounds, which gave Texas many second chances. The Sooners were led by redshirt freshman Stacey Dales and sophomore Desiree Taylor, who each had double-doubles. With the loss, the Sooners are 8-8 overall and 2-4 in the Big 12.
Top-rated fullback makes commitment to Sooners
The OU football team added another recruit to its list with the verbal commitment of Blue Springs, Mo., running back Jamar Mozee. "When we visited OU a couple of weeks ago we were impressed," Patricia Mozee, Jamar's mother, said. "We weren't expecting what we saw. We know the school has a lot of history." One key selling point was OU's running back heritage, Patricia Mozee said. Mozee was Super Prep magazine's top-rated fullback. He ran for 1,850 yards and 34 touchdowns his senior year.
Gretzky leads All-Star squad to 8-6 victory
TAMPA, Fla. -- What scoring problem? Led by Wayne Gretzky, the greatest all-star of them all, the goals came fast and easy as the North America team beat the World team 8-6 Sunday in another typical '90s shootout. As usual, it was no checking, no hitting and no goaltending in the wide-open midseason game that has become a nightmare for netminders. Gretzky, a last-minute replacement for Philadelphia's Eric Lindros at center, had a goal and two assists. His goal extended his All-Star record to 13 in 18 games and his two assists gave him 12, tying him with four other players for the all-time mark. Gretzky was the All-Star MVP for the third time in his unparalleled career.
