The fifth-ranked Sooner wrestling team returned to action Saturday, defeating Brown 37-6, 15th-ranked Cal State-Bakersfield 35-6 and Wisconsin, 37-3, in the Lonestar Duals.
"The key word coming into the meet was 'dominate,' and our primary focus was ourselves, our own preparation," said head coach Jack Spates. The team lost only four matches at the duals, all by backups.
"One standout was Waymon May, who won all three matches and beat some really tough kids, including his last match with Ryan LaGrange, who just finished upsetting the fourth-ranked wrestler in the country," Spates said. "Jared Frayer was also very impressive, dominating 15th-ranked Mike Mendoza of Bakersfield."
May is currently ranked 10th nationally, with six other Sooner wrestlers among the top 10 in individual rankings. While the team overpowered its three opponents, the duals marked the successful return of All-Americans Dane Valdez and David Kjeldgaard, both finishing with 3-0 records at the duals.
"I feel really confident now after I got those first three matches under my belt last weekend," Kjeldgaard said. "Wrestling a match is a lot different than practice, no matter how intense you are in the practice room. I feel a lot more confident this weekend than I did last weekend, and I'm just really looking forward to this opportunity."
The team escaped the duals without new injuries. However, Tom Grossman is still out with torn cartilage. "Tommy Grossman will be missing (the Long Island Challenge on Saturday) as he's had knee surgery, but the doctor said he's two weeks ahead of schedule," Spates said. "He may well be with us for the National Duals, which is huge."
