First class of recruits signs on for Stoops era
by   |  February 4, 1999  |

Four quarters made the Sooner recruiting class richer.

OU football head coach Bob Stoops announced the 23 members of his staff's first OU recruiting class Wednesday. Four quarterbacks were among the signees.

Stoops said one of the biggest needs the team had was at quarterback.

The coaching staff recruited four quarterbacks to the team including Josh Heupel from Snow Junior College in Utah, Chase Williams from Tulsa, Jason White from Tuttle and Brandon Everage from Granger, Texas.

"I thought we signed four guys that are good passers and good athletes," Stoops said. "They have good feet. They will fit well in our system."

Stoops said he is looking forward to coaching the new players.

"I'm very excited about signing this class," Stoops said. "I feel the signees are a strong class that will support the existing group of players."

Stoops said 17 of the 23 recruits have qualified academically.
Stoops said he wants to redshirt many of the recruits, but some of them will have the opportunity to play next season.

"For the most part, if a young man is in a position to play quite a bit and is in the top two in the position, I'll play him," Stoops said. "If he's not going to get a lot of snaps, it is probably not worth another year."

The coaches have said they want the offense to be balanced between passing and rushing, but it has been speculated that the team will pass more than it will rush.

"My idea of balanced is that we can take what the defense gives us," OU offensive coordinator Mike Leach said. "If they line up in the box, we need to throw it, but if they leave the middle open, we need to run."

Stoops said there is a strong possibility two recruited quarterbacks will need to play next season.

"Josh Heupel already being here going through spring ball will definitely give him an advantage," he said. "That was certainly a big plus in recruiting him."

Leach said Brandon Daniels is working at running back and receiver, but Jake Sills is still a quarterback.

The coaches also signed several running backs.

OU running backs coach Cale Gundy said Jamar Mozee of Blue Springs, Mo., will give the team more depth at running back.

"He's a very good back," Gundy said. "Mozee is a strong powerful back who will fit well with the current running backs."

The coaches recruited 10 defensive players.

Defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said the defensive formations will be different from last year's, but it should not be hard for the athletes to adjust.

"The front four will really line up like they did last year," Mike Stoops said. "The main thing that will be different will be the terminology."
