OU football offensive coordinator Mike Leach said Wednesday that
he was offered the head coaching job at Texas Tech.
But he said had not yet decided if he would accept the
position.
Leach said it is a very difficult decision for him to make but
that his family is the biggest part of the decision.
Leach made it clear Wednesday that he had not made a decision.
“It’s just hard to leave Oklahoma,” he said. But
he said he likes the vision of the Texas Tech athletic department
and what the Red Raiders want to do with the program.
Texas Tech Athletic Director Gerald Myers declined to comment,
but the Red Raiders have called a press conference for Thursday
morning at 10 a.m. Texas Tech is looking to replace former head
coach Spike Dykes who announced his retirement Nov. 20. Dykes was
the Red Raider head coach for 13 years.
Clemson offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez and New Mexico
State coach Tony Samuel withdrew from consideration earlier this
week.
OU football head coach Bob Stoops said he will support Leach
whether he decides to leave OU or to stay. “If that’s
best for Mike and what he chooses to do, we’re all for him
and we’re proud of him and appreciative of what he did for us
here,” Stoops said. “If not, we’d love to have
him back.”
With the help of quarterback Josh Heupel, Leach’s
wide-open formations helped the OU offense finish No. 11 in the
country and No. 1 in the Big 12 averaging 427.2 yards per game.
The Sooners’ offense ranked 101 in the country last year.
“(Leach) was one of the reasons why I came here,”
Heupel said. “I’m very excited for him because of the
opportunity that he may have for his family and his career, but as
a player, I’m selfish, and I hope he doesn’t go.”
Heupel said he had not talked with Leach about the job offer
before Wednesday. “I wished the best for him,” he said.
“I’m 100 percent behind him whether he stays or
goes.” Leach said he was taking the decision seriously, but
he did not say if it is an opportunity he can’t pass up.
“If I don’t pass it up, it’s one I can’t.
If I do pass it up, it’s one I can,” he said.
Leach said that if he did accept the position, he would leave
quickly, but he said he did not know if he would leave before OU
plays in the Independence Bowl on Dec. 31. “That’s up
in the air,” Leach said. “That’s not just my
decision. There’s a lot that goes into that.”
