Greek filmmaker Renos Haralambidis will be on campus tonight for a discussion and showing of his film No Budget Story. The film will be shown tonight in 200 Dale Hall and is free and open to the public.
The film is sponsored by The Other Film Club. Film and video studies professor Andrew Horton will introduce Haralambidis at 7 p.m. He will discuss his film, and it will then be shown.
Haralambidis, a 28-year-old native of Athens, Greece, directed, wrote and starred in No Budget Story. He grew up with a great love for movies, especially American films. When he became a filmmaker, he suffered a problem many aspiring filmmakers have: He had no money.
Instead of letting this set him back, Haralambidis, then 26, scraped together $10,000 for a four-week shooting schedule to make No Budget Story. The film tells the story of a young filmmaker who attempts to make a movie without money.
Like the character in the film, Haralambidis used friends and fellow actors as the movie's cast.
No Budget Story won awards throughout Europe, and Robert DeNiro invited Haralambidis to screen the film in New York.
"This is a fresh talent for Greece because (No Budget Story) is playful," Horton said. Haralambidis and Horton agree that Greek movies are usually much more serious than American ventures.
Even though the film is a comedy, Haralambidis does not wish to be called a comedic performer.
"Life is a comedy and a tragedy. It depends on where I am and what I am doing," Haralambidis said.
He just finished his latest script, which he will begin directing soon.
The actor does get serious when the subject of Kosovo arises.
The conflict is a 10-hour drive from Greece. Haralambidis said if things get worse it could have a serious impact on his country.
On a lighter note, Haralambidis urges students in filmmaking to do whatever they can to perfect their craft.
"Filmmaking is like breathing ... you should trust yourself and do what you think," Haralambidis said.
The screening of No Budget Story was made possible with the support of the Campus Film Series. For more information or accommodations on the basis of disability, call 325-3020.
