OU President David Boren will open the session following lunch.

Roundtable discussion includes Robert Gates, former CIA director who will speak about "An Evaluation of Intelligence During the Cold War" and

Current CIA director will discuss "A Strategic Look at Intelligence for the Future."

Participants will include OU political science professor Stephen Sloan.

* Inaugural Board of Visitors meeting 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., International Programs Center, Whitehand Hall; and

* Reception and buffet dinner for Board of Visitors and presenters

Monday, Sept. 15

* Breakfast Address

8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. By reservation only.

President Boren reopens conference and introduces former U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn, who will speak on "Protecting and Defining our National Security in a Changed World." Boren and Ambassador Edward Perkins will moderate the discussion.

* Roundtable discussion

9:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Holmberg Hall. Professor Gaddis Smith, Larned Professor of History, Yale University, speaks about "The State of the World as We Enter the 21st Century."

Other presentations by James R. Jones, former ambassador to Mexico, Western Hemisphere; Jack Matlock Jr., former U.S. ambassador to Russia, Russia, Commonwealth of Independent States and Europe; George Moose, former assistant secretary for African Affairs, Africa; James Hoagland, Pulitzer-Prize winning Washington Post columnist, issues of strategic importance that include the Middle East peace process and the European Union, Europe; Prince Bandar Ban Sultan, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia, Middle East.

Participants will include Ambassador George C. McGhee and Ambassador Edwin G. Corr.

Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, Leavey Professor of Government at Georgetown University and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, speaks about "United States Relationships with Nations Emerging as World Leaders."

Boren and Perkins will moderate the discussion.

* Roundtable discussion

2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. at Holmberg Hall. Former CIA directors discuss "The Role and Organization of U.S. Intelligence for the 21st Century."

Panelists include Ambassador Richard Helms, James Woolsey and Judge William Webster. OU political science professor Robert Cox will discuss and Boren will moderate.

* Address by Richard L. Sandor

4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Meacham Auditorium, OMU.

Sandor is former professor of economics at the University of California at Berkley, former Chief Economist on Board of Trade, Chicago, and originator of the concept of financial futures markets and environmental futures markets, will speak on "United States' Role in International and Environmental Policy."

OU professor M.G. Rajeev Gowda, Research Fellow, Science and Public Policy, will be discussant. Panel moderated by OU philosophy professor Zev Trachtenberg.

5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Library Great Reading Room. By reservation only.

* Keynote address

6:45 p.m. in the OMU Ballroom. By reservation only.

Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of State, will speak on "The Architecture of an American Foreign Policy for the 21st Century." Overflow seating in Meacham Auditorium.

Tuesday, Sept. 16

8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Art Museum. By reservation only.

Boren introduces David Gergen, former presidential adviser and commentator on the Lehrer News Hour and Editor, U.S. News and World Report. Gergen speaks on "The Media and International Relations and Foreign Policy."

Participants: Lee Cullum, Dallas Morning News columnist; OU professor David Dary, director, Journalism and Mass Communication; Lois Romano, Washington Post columnist.

* Panel discussion

10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Holmberg Hall.

"The U.S. and Asia," moderated by Perkins

Presentations by Jan Berris, vice president, National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, original staffer to the historic "Ping Pong" U.S.-Chinese Meeting, Stanford University; Ambassador Frank McNeil, former deputy assistant Secretary of State for East Asian Affairs; professor Michel Oskenberg, senior fellow, Asia-Pacific Research Center; professor Dunren Zhou, Center for American Studies, Fudan University, Shanghi, China.

Participants: OU history professor Mikael Adolphson; OU geology and geophysics professor Marlan Downey, J. Denny Bartel Professorship. Perkins will moderate the discussion.

Boren introduces Li Daoyu, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the United States, who will speaks about "Asia in the 21st Century: The View from China."

"Trade Policy and Preparing America's Economy for the 21st Century," moderated by Richard Cosier, dean, Michael F. Price College of Business.

Presentations by Ambassador Clayton K. Yeutter, former U.S. trade representative, chief U.S. trade negotiator, and former Secretary of Agriculture on "U.S. Trade Policy for the 21st Century;" Ambassador John Wolf, U.S. ambassador to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum, on "Trade Organizations;" Michael F. Price, OU alumnus and businessman, on "Strengthening the U.S. Economy for International Competition;" Luke Corbett on "Trade Sanctions: Pluses and Minuses in U.S. Foreign Policy."

Participants: W. De Vier Pierson, partner, Pierson Semmes and Bernis; Max Berry, attorney specializing in international trade law.

* Address by Author Colleen McCullough

4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Art Museum. McCullough is author of The Thorn Birds, and the series The Masters of Rome, and will speak on "The Lessons of the Roman Experience for the United States as a Superpower in the 21st Century."

Participants: OU history professor Alfred S. Bradford; OU classics professor J. Rufus Fears, Blankenship Chair.

Perkins will moderate the discussion.
