The Sooners' wrestling squad has a profitable weekend as it came up with two victories over ranked opponents.
OU, 10-3 on the year, defeated 10th-ranked Arizona State on Friday night and then turned around and downed 24th-ranked Wyoming on Saturday night.
Despite the victories, OU Head Coach Jack Spates said his team was ready for a break from the continuous action his team has had the past weekend.
"We are ready to take some time off," he said. "We're kind of banged up, but we haven't been out-conditioned much this year."
The Sooners' match against Wyoming came down to the wire Saturday night.
OU took an early 4-0 lead thanks to 118-pounder Shane Valdez' major decision over the Cowboys' Corey Hamrick.
After Valdez's match, OU lost the next three matches, including one by pin at 134 pounds. By the time the dust had settled, the Sooners were staring at a 12-4 deficit.
OU fought back, winning the next three matches. Biff Jones decisioned Wyoming's ninth-ranked Brent Voorhees, 6-3, while Byron Tucker squeezed by Brandon Alderman at 158 pounds, 6-4.
Frank Trigg regained the lead for the Sooners at 167 pounds with an intenses, injury-plagued match with the Cowboys' Scott Cleleand. The match was stopped twice for injuries before Trigg held on to win 12-6 and give OU a 13-12 team advantage.
The tables turned once again on the Sooners as 177 pounder Zach Randall was pinned at the 1:27 mark in the second period by All-American Reese Andy. This left OU facing a 18-12 disadvantage.
"Zach's a good kid; he's a real competitor," Spates said. "The guy he was up against was a two-time All-American. "We're not happy about it, but it's not the end of the world."
OU's All-American at 190 pounds, John Kading, went to work trying to reduce the deficit in his match with Jason Klohs. Unofrtunately for the Sooners, Kading was only able to muster a 7-2 decision and narrow the team gap to 18-15 going into the final match.
OU's heavyweight, Trey Swan, needed a major decision or a pin in his match with Wyoming's Nathan Hoehn to win it for the Sooners. At the very least, Swan needed a decision to tie the score. Neither seemed possible after a scoreless first period, but Swan picked it up in the second, out-scoring Hoehn 5-1.
Trey matched the feat in the third, managing a takedown within the final 15 seconds of the match to snag the major decision and give the Sooners a heart-stopping 119-18 win over the Cowboys.
"That's an awful lot of pressure to carry," Spates said of Swan. "He has big shoulders, and he carries it well. He's a hero."
OU won Friday night as well, as they downed Arizona State 18-12. As they did on Saturday night, the Sooners fought back from a 9-3 disadvantage before winning five of the last six matches.
Trey Swan was once again the hero as his decision over the Sun Devil's Dannny Faqir ensured the victory for the Sooners.
