OU professor, chair wins political science award
by   |  January 10, 1996  |

Ronald Peters, OU professor and chair of the Department of Political Science, was recognized for his leadership in establishing the Carl Albert Congressional Research and Studies Center and for his record of research and instruction.

Peters was recognized by the Oklahoma Political Sciences Association as Outstanding Political Scientist of the year.

Peters said he was pleased and surprised by the award.

"It's always nice to be recognized by your peers," he said.

Peters, who has taught at OU since 1975, began developing the plans for the Carl Albert Center in the early '80s.

The center houses the OU congressional archives and promotes research and understanding of the workings of Congress.

"(The Carl Albert Center) is the leading congressional research facility in the nation and the only federally funded one," Peters said.

His research focused on the U.S. Speaker of the House.

Peters is the author of several books about the speakership including The American Speakership: The Office in Historical Perspective.

Peters said he wanted to research the speakership because there had not been a comprehensive study in many years.

"I became interested in the speakership when I began developing the Carl Albert Center," Peters said.

Peters also has worked to develop the Julian J. Rothbaum Distinguished Lectureship in Representative Government.

The lectureship brings distinguished speakers to campus to lecture on the workings of the government.
