Regents approve extra union funding
by   |  November 3, 1995  |

The university should begin to see work on the Oklahoma Memorial Union by Dec. 1, the director of the union said Thursday.

The OU Board of Regents approved OU President David Boren's request to spend an extra $500,000 on Oklahoma Memorial Union renovations at its regular meeting Wednesday.

Tom Ellis, director of the union, said the construction should begin in about 30 days.

The $7.75 million project was originally estimated at $7.2 million.

The regents awarded the construction contract to Flintco, Inc. of Oklahoma City. Five companies bid on the project. Flintco gave the lowest bid.

Ellis said the improvements will restore the building to the way it used to be before remodeling in the 1950s. The union opened in 1930.

The additions to the building will resemble the original architecture. The decor will be in crimson, cream and hunter green.

Boren said the union should house more recreational areas for members of campus. He said the renovation will restore the union to a central meeting place for students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Boren said Phases I and II will be worked on simultaneously. He said the project will be done quicker, cheaper and easier.

"We are elated that we have found a way to move forward without further delay on the total union project," he said.

Phase I includes the renovation of the ballroom, meeting rooms and support service areas. Meacham Auditorium will be revamped by the addition of lights and modern equipment.
Offices of Student Development and Student Services will be adapted to accommodate the changes.

Phase I will also see the construction of a new elevator and a stair tower in the south wing. Renovations in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and fire and safety guidelines will be completed. Phase II will enlarge the food court and dining area.

The terrace outside the Will Rogers Dining Room will be enclosed, and a new patio will be constructed near the south wing. An additional 7,500 square feet will be added to the eating area.

The new patio will be equipped with special lighting and sound equipment so the area can accommodate concerts and receptions.

Jerry Farley, vice president of Administrative Affairs, said the union should be a more inviting place for students. He said comfortable booths and seating will be one of the renovations.

Workers are currently removing asbestos from the building.
The work is projected to cost the university $900,000.
