Independence Day means many different activities for members of the OU community.
For some, it is a chance to enjoy Norman.
David Smith, an Oklahoma City teacher whose wife Theresa is director of Institutional Research, said he has watched the Reaves Park fireworks display for almost 20 years, usually from his home.
"I love it here. We usually plan our summer vacation after the Fourth and SummerWind," he said.
Suzi Towles, a biology senior, said she prefers making her own fireworks display.
"I might go with some friends to light off fireworks out in the country somewhere," she said.
Others said they don't need the excitment to celebrate America's birthday.
Amanda Staggs, a journalism junior, is going to Lake Texoma.
She said she was looking forward to "just being with my family."
Other students said that they were having trouble making plans because the holiday falls on a Tuesday.
Archaeology senior Julie Rogers is "just planning on sitting around with my friends."
